American film director who rapidly rose to fame in 199x on the back of his directorial debut, Reservoir Dogs, in which he also acted. A stylish, witty yet bloody heist movie, this set the tone for his later films. The follow up Pulp Fiction, which won the Palme D'or at the Cannes film festival, was a complexly plotted portmanteau film with a similarly brutal wit and many excellent performances. It was noted for reviving the career of John Travolta.
