Power metal is an extremely vague term, occasionally refering to anything from Judas Priest and other artists from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal to any arena-ready heavy metal sound, like Def Leppard or Guns 'n Roses. The most dominant definition, though defines the term as referring to a group of primarily continental European (primarily Germany and Scandinavia) thrash, death and black metal bands from the [1990s]]. The genre's proponents re-added melody and classical beauty to the harsh and inaccessible sounds then popular in hardcore metal scenes. It never broke out of continental Europe to any great degree, though practicing bands have emerged from North and South America, Great Britain and Australia.
